Sexual Assault Response Advocates

Sexual Assault Response Advocates (SARAs) are on-call 24-hours a day to provide emotional support, advocacy, and crisis counseling to sexual assault survivors at hospitals, police stations and throughout the legal system. The purpose of a SARA is to provide support and information to a victim and family members during the sexual assault examination, and assist the nurse in any way possible.

YWCA SARAs work with Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center to provide the only SANE room response in northwest Oklahoma. The SARA team is comprised of both staff and volunteers who have completed an intense 34-hour training program. Training is offered several times a year to those who want to volunteer.

Suggestions for prevention

  • Set your own personal limits
  • Trust your feelings and thoughts
  • Communicate your limits
  • “No” is always an option, at any point
  • Never be alone with someone you just met

5 Things to say to a Victim of Sexual Assault

  • “It’s not your fault.”
  • “You didn’t do anything to deserve this.”
  • “I’m here for you if you need to talk.”
  • “It’s important for you to see a doctor.”
  • “Talking to a counselor can help you recover.”

NOTE: Despite the violation and reality of physical and emotional trauma, victims of acquaintance assault often do not identify their experience as sexual assault. Instead of focusing on the violation of the sexual assault, victims of acquaintance rape often blame themselves for the assault

What to tell a victim of sexual assault

  • As soon as you are out of the situation, tell someone you can trust: so you will have someone to support you.
  • Do NOT bathe, shower, or change your clothing if avoidable.
  • Call the Police
  • The police involve the Sexual Assault Response team.
  • All the necessary resources (counseling, legal assistance) will be provided through members of the Sexual Assault Response team
For every women who stands up for justice... and every women who stands by her side. For every women who confronts a glass ceiling... and every women who is ready to raise the roof. For every women looking for a fair shake... and every women who wants to shake things up.
