Emergency Shelter
The YWCA Crisis Center provides emergency shelter to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. The center is staffed 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year by highly-trained, qualified and caring staff. The shelter is a highly-secured and confidential facility protected by a state-of-the-art monitoring system.
YWCA Crisis Center offers a community living environment which means clients share a living room, kitchen, dining room, bathroom facilities, children’s playroom, teen room and laundry room. The bathroom facilities include several shower and toilet stalls along with lockers for personal items. The kitchen also includes lockers for personal food items.
Families (women and their children) are provided with their own room while single woman may be asked to share a room, depending on the number of clients in the shelter. Each client is provided with their own door code for their room. Each room is equipped with a desk, bed(s), cribs (if necessary) dresser, bulletin board, chair and walk-in closet. All linens are provided along with any needed personal care items.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do people become Crisis Center residents?
Clients come to us in a variety of ways. For example, a police officer may ask a victim of domestic violence if they would like emergency shelter, and the officer will call ahead and inform staff of their arrival. A majority of our clients have called the Crisis Line and talked to a victim advocate regarding shelter. We ask them to come in for what is called a “Face to Face.” This is a chance for the victim advocate to evaluate their situation (we do NOT require proof of abuse) and determine if the Crisis Center is the right place for them. Our goal is to provide emergency shelter for victims in immediate need.
Can my family members visit me while I stay at the Crisis Center?
Family and/or friends of Crisis Center clients are not allowed in the Crisis Center. We maintain the highest level confidentiality! Even if you know a friend or family member is staying at the Crisis Center, we will not confirm or deny their presence. A public phone is provided to clients in the Crisis Center for local calls, and, of course, clients are free to keep their cell phones.
Are men admitted to the shelter?
Because we are a community living environment, we cannot house male victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse or stalking. However, we do provide all other services to our male clients, and can transport them to another facility for emergency shelter. If a mother is admitted with any older male children, we have a family room which is equipped with its own bathroom. This room is also handicapped accessible.
Can I bring my car?
Yes. The YWCA provides a fenced-off parking area for clients. If you do not have a vehicle, Crisis Center staff provides free transportation.
How long can I stay?
Clients can stay for up to 30 days, but are free to leave at any time. Clients can also file an extension request which is reviewed by the Women’s Services Director.
