FAQ
Q: How do people become Crisis Center residents?
A: Clients come to us in a variety of ways. For example, a police officer may ask a victim of domestic violence if they would like emergency shelter, and the officer will call ahead and inform staff of their arrival. A majority of our clients have called the Crisis Line and talked to a victim advocate regarding shelter. We ask them to come in for what is called a “Face to Face.” This is a chance for the victim advocate to evaluate their situation (we do NOT require proof of abuse) and determine if the Crisis Center is the right place for them. Our goal is to provide emergency shelter for victims in immediate need.
Q: Can my family members visit me while I stay at the Crisis Center?
A: Family and/or friends of Crisis Center clients are not allowed in the Crisis Center. We maintain the highest level of confidentiality! Even if you know a friend or family member is staying at the Crisis Center, we will not confirm or deny their presence. A public phone is provided to clients in the Crisis Center for local calls, and, of course, clients are free to keep their cell phones.
Q: Are men admitted to the shelter?
A: Because we are a community living environment, we cannot house male victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse or stalking. However, we do provide all other services to our male clients, and can transport them to another facility for emergency shelter. If a mother is admitted with any older male children, we have a family room which is equipped with its own bathroom. This room is also handicapped accessible.
Q: Can I bring my car?
A: Yes. The YWCA provides a fenced-off parking area for clients. If you do not have a vehicle, Crisis Center staff provide free transportation.
Q: How long can I stay?
A: Clients can stay for up to 30 days, but are free to leave at any time. Clients can also file an extension request which is reviewed by the Women’s Services Director.
